IndieGoGo We’re almost there!

7 days
20 donors
$100 each

Thanks to many generous donations, we’ve almost reached our semi-annual fundraising campaign goal of $5,000, but we’re not there yet. We still need your help, whether you can make a donation or simply help spread the word before July 1. Visit our campaign page on IndieGoGo for more info about supporting world-class art in Italy!

(In other news, we’re honored that IndieGoGo chose to feature our campaign on their blog!)

Artmonks around the world

The Art Monastery may be thriving in Italy, but we also have exciting things happening elsewhere in the world. In the next few months, keep an eye out for Artmonks at Burning Man in Nevada; Nowhere, the European version of Burning Man in Spain; several weddings between former Art Monastery folks (Shall we start www.monkmatch.com?) in the United States; planning the 2012 Burning Man Opera in California; and studying theater directing in New York. We are also thrilled at the progress of the Art Monastery San Francisco, headed up by Nathan Rosquist. (If you’d like to know more about AM San Francisco, email nathan@artmonastery.org). Our local chapters are also alive and well in ten U.S. cities. Click here to join one or find out how to start your own.

Monks Go Green

Another exciting relationship that continues to develop is the Art Monastery’s collaboration with Legambiente, the Italian environmental league, and Federculture, one of Italy’s national cultural organizations. Through our contacts at these organizations, we have several new opportunities to look forward to this year, including a performance at Festambiente, a festival about ecology and sustainability, and several special one-month art residencies hosted by local governments in small towns throughout Italy. Stay tuned on our webpage for more updates as plans evolve.

An Artmonk’s Life: Lady GaGa, the American Embassy, and monks on fire

Monk Work

The Italy Artmonks kicked off our summer with a pre-season performance of Gioco di Fuoco, a new theater piece based on the myth of Vesta and features pyrotechnics, fire dance, and original music. The show’s debut was a hit, and we look forward to expanding and refining it as an evolving part of the Art Monastery repertoire.

(Want to know more? Click here for a link to Charles’ original score, here for our Italian booking page, or here for Molly’s account of creating the piece – and more photos.)

Monk Play

We’re excited to continue sinking our roots deeper into Labro, Italy, and the European arts community. Lately, we’ve had some amazing experiences with the U.S. Embassy, including gigs at their gorgeous headquarters and marching with them in the Euro Pride Parade. (Read Molly’s thoughts on the embassy and expats here.) We’re also developing relationships with fascinating and talented artists in Europe. Check out The Caravan Stage Company, the La MaMa theater program in Umbria, and the Spoleto Fringe Festival. Keep an eye on our web site for updates on future collaborations!

Coming Up: Bird dancers, chili peppers, and summer homes

Monk Plans

Our first official show of the Summer Season was last weekend and we couldn’t be more pleased! Maria Cleary (harp), Davide Monti (violin), and Iwona Koprowska (soprano) graced our lovely little church with a virtuosic and playful concert featuring works by Uccellini, Handel, and Mozart. If their performance and the audience’s response is any indication, we’re in for a fantastic summer. So what’s coming up?

Meg Brooker performing the work of Isadora Duncan

This week we’re hosting Time Freed in Verse and Steps, an innovative collaboration between two Isadora Duncan dancers (Meg Brooker and Julia Pond), two pianistis (Fiorenza Bucciarelli and Silvia Gianuzzi), and a clarinet player (Cheryl Piana). Next up, we welcome members of Santa Barbara’s Bird Tribe for a two-week residency culminating in the performance of Picnic in Galapagos, an original site-specific dance piece by award-winning choreographer and film-maker Robin Bisio. Meanwhile, Artmonks also will perform at the Rieti Chili Pepper Festival, the Medieval Festival in Poggio, and a number of fun private gigs. Check out our news page to see what else we’ve got planned, including visual arts exhibitions, a variety of musical performances, and film screenings.
