(L to R): Phoebe Jevtovic Alexander and Candace Smith perform with the Art Monastery Project at Giornate Medioevale, Poggio.

Longtime Art Monastery friend, supporter, collaborator, and visiting artist, Candace Smith, is launching a Kickstarter campaign for her music ensemble, Cappella Artemisia. This is not an Art Monastery Project campaign, but we whole-heartedly support her, her group, and their mission. Below, the word from Candace:

Cappella Artemisia launches a Kickstarter campaign!

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Italian convents were famous for their incredible singing nuns. The music heard (but not seen: the nuns had to remain invisible behind grates) was famous throughout Europe and the convents were some of the hottest tourist attractions around.

Cappella Artemisia is an ensemble of women musicians dedicated to performing the music of Italian convents of the 16th and 17th centuries. We have six CDs currently available and we now hope to continue our work with 2 more recordings of music from two important feasts in the lives of these cloistered women: Christmas and Holy Week. The project will involve about 15-20 women musicians from Europe and America. We’d like to record and then tour with these programs in Europe and North America (and hopefully elsewhere!)

We are now trying to raise funds to finance this project. The money for the recordings would go toward travel and artists’ fees, rental costs of church and organ, recording and production costs and other expenses. For touring, the funds would help cover travel expenses, visas and administrative costs, artists’ fees and lodgings for rehearsals, and the many other expenses incurred with this project.

Although our funding goal will only cover a part of these costs, we’re hoping that it will be easier to find matching funds to make up the difference. And who knows? Maybe we’ll earn more than we’re asking for!

We’ve offered a wide range of rewards for our donors. Please look them over and give generously (and if you’ve got ideas for other rewards as well, let us know! We’ll be happy to accommodate if possible!)
