The current locus for hosting artists is through the Art Monastery’s subsidiary the aRt & D Labs in collaboration with The Alchemy in Los Angeles. Please direct all inquiries there.
A significant part of the Art Monastery’s mission and Art Monastery Italia’s practice and programming consisted of providing opportunities to Visiting Artists, which was based around the idea of artistic exchange: short-term accommodation for artists in small Italian village in exchange for one public performance/exhibition of previously-developed work. Their work hosting artists was recognized by the Transformative Learning partnership and recorded in the book Hosting Transformation.
AM Italia, operated by the long-term Artmonks, produced artistic events in historic monasteries and other public and private spaces. During the summer, the AM Italia was in high season, producing several shows a week and inviting a few specific artists to join them for longer periods of time as Artmonks-in-Residence. During the spring & fall, AM Italia offered shorter residencies to select visiting artists from various disciplines.
The process or product of the work developed at AM Italia should be inspired by the mission and values of the Art Monastery Project, Artmonk Life (as experienced while here), or the Venn Diagram. Visiting Artists were encouraged to publish weekly (written or video) blogs about their process and experience at the AMP throughout their residency. Visiting Artists were expected to participate in Artmonk exchanges twice per week (creative skill shares where we exchange ideas and hold space for collaboration.) One skill share is led by the Visiting Artist and one skill share is led by the Artmonks each week.
